Aims

do we want to;

challenge the perception of innovation, using the opportunity as a starting point of discussion where our audience are forced to discover their opinion and re-evaluate their approach to the subject and even their aspirations.

not just know that we want it, but knowing why we want it.

question why we want to innovate and why we need to.

form an opinion, break our opinion down into issues and then act upon one of those issues they may relate to the wider population.

What do people care about the most?

Form our own interpretation of what innovation is.

Challenge ones opinion and preconceptions of innovation and all that surrounds it.

Is innovation important?

Quick thought on the Process

Posted in Uncategorized by Charlie on April 19, 2009

We go on about the process being forgotten or disregarded. Well, I do think the process is mainly forgotten, But do we (as designers) intentionally cover up the process and purposely present the object/idea as though it ‘just was created’. therefor, it is not the observers thought that they do not see the process. I think I try my best to not show the process (but as of recently I am attempting to show the developments of all my projects). Don’t you think we try to convey that the ‘piece’ whatever it may be miraculously was created and popped out of nothing into something great? Is this why we perceive innovation (adaptation) and those big ideas as being plucked out of thin air because it is way more romantic and adventurous and then we may be regarded as geniuses?

Just a thought.. what you think?

Posted in Discussion by Charlie on April 11, 2009

It seems that innovation is the word that defines a successful adaptation of a sequence, approach, process, object, idea or ‘thing’. If we assume this is a worthy point then we undeniably pursue this notion more than we think and not just when we choose to. If innovation is just an adaptation then we must accomplish this more than we are aware of.

With each and every thing I do there contains a process, a process that defines the outcome. Who at this point determines whether the outcome is innovative enough to be labeled as innovation? To my immediate mind I may have pushed myself to extremes, working day and night, night and day to achieve a goal that has re-evaluated my ethics, challenged my process and changed my approach(s). At this point I consider to have succeeded a personal level of innovation where I have ultimately changed the shape of my personality adopting new options and values. But, where is this recognized? It is clear that I am being innovative on a personal level, but is this enough, will this ever gain recognition as the end product repeatedly seizes to reflect my struggle and the outcome doesn’t reflect the process is it a complete and utter failure? It is hard to say but what I remain clear about is that If I maintain a goal to strive to innovate on a level of my own approach(s) then one day this may lead to bigger things.

It is important to know what I am aiming to achieve and to whom I am asking to respond. At the end of the day, it may only be myself but for most of the time it isn’t.

Blind:

When carrying out my work, a universal aim is to do something innovative. It seems that the perception of innovation has become somewhat tangled with the notion of success. Innovation being the ultimate goal, yet I don’t think i fully understand what it is. How absurd, working for something I’m unsure about, just assuming that i should be trying to reach it. Perhaps the sensible thing would be to define exactly what innovation is before i start running blindly after it?

What do i want to achieve? I want to adapt, i want to evolve, i want to question myself and explore things i know nothing about. I want to be appreciated and recognized.

Aims/Does innovation exist?

I want to identify a message that has needs to heard, and communicate it in a way that is utterly appropriate. I want my work to have real value, relevant and applicable to a wider audience. I want to present a perspective that has never been seen, and in doing so go down a route which i have never been. I want to be surprised by the outcomes and be pushed into places i couldn’t have expected. I want to be original and question any preconceived boundaries. So, is it innovation that i want? Does innovation even exist? Is innovation about producing something that is completely new, creating entirely from scratch, or is it an adaptation of what already exists? Does innovation really exist, the notion of something never before seen? How closely does adaptation come into play when we consider innovation? Did Newton conjure up the laws of physics out of thin air, all on his own, or was he a huge part of a contribution over the history of mankind? Innovation and originality may themselves be misconceptions, blinded to the process and what came before.

Don’t miss the process:

It seems that in hindsight, we become generally blinded to process. Like a bad hangover, every time insisting it’ll be the last time we drink, once we are down the pub again that evening, we have totally forgotten the painful mess we were previously in. Pain is naturally neglected, outweighed by the overwhelming positives of the particular circumstance. It is easy to think of innovation in relation to the apple falling on the head, or the great leap from the bathtub, but is this apparent epiphany likely to be the only factor? Ground breaking discoveries, perfectly crafted objects or the most complicated of equations don’t just land on your doorstep with a flash from the heavens. Such influential developments often come with months, years of devoted and intensive labor, countless experiments, and many a failure. It is easy to fail to see the full extent of the process which led to a point of innovation.

Why do we want to innovate again?

Why do we have this desire to go where no man has gone before? We do we want to innovate? Can i be blamed for wanting to sit next to the likes of Darwin and Newton, after witnessing their influence and recognition even today? Perhaps it is because they have branded themselves into the history books of humanity, giving themselves a kind of immortality. Maybe a big part of this aspiration is merely achieving the satisfaction of recognition, or perhaps it is just for personal satisfaction? The chase for new things may also be purely natural. The far reaches of space seem so appealing to me. Curiosity can often lead us blindly into the unknown, fueled by the vastness of the imagination.

It may be hazardous:

Should we be striving to achieve innovation? Is such a devotion and intense aspiration healthy for us? On the grand scheme of things, innovation brings about change, improvements, adaptation and development. It is what drives the evolution of humanity, changing the shape of the world, and extending our breadth of knowledge. Nevertheless, the individuals carrying out, or attempting such a responsible task may not be experiencing solely the benefits. Such devotion may present a danger, destructive and oppressive. The reality of continued in-satisfaction can prove hazardous.

Does innovation have a scale, can it be measured? The amount of people who are influenced?

Summery of todays session

In summery;

We asked ourselves why we are investigating innovation and what does it mean to us. We mentioned that everything we do is aimed at innovating and how are we meant to do this if we do not fully understand what it actually means.

We questioned our own perceptions of innovation and what it means to innovate by weighing up the costs of innovating for example, depression, anxiety, stress. But we didn’t forget the benefits of course.

We relate innovation with success, in other words – your not successful if you don’t innovate. Well, you may be successful in the profession you are in but not regarded as a leader of that profession if you do not innovate.

People who are innovate generally are remembered and recognized as successful. Therefore, are we striving to innovate for recognition over anything else, to be remembered and respected. This applies to all disciplines.

We mentioned that we should use this time to investigate and reflect on the findings we make by relating them to ourselves and others alike. What will we discover, how will it change our ethics, mindset and goals. How do we supply our audience with the message of think twice about what you are trying to do, because that is what we are effectively doing – thinking twice, judging and evaluating what we aim to achieve as designers. But we also said we want to be able to apply our production to the general population who’s main goals are, at the end of the day to innovate.

Please edit this, its a bit rough and I don’t have the notes.

What is innovation site

www.whatisinnovation.com

check this website out, more attempts at defining innovation but they also have a gallery where people post stuff they think are innovative, or deal with the issue of innovation.

found this on it; what a cool video!

This little description is looking at the boundary between inventor and innovator. I really like where these sentences are going and could conjure up a direction to go with regards to our creation (whatever it may be)….

If there were only two kinds of people in the world, there would be the inventors and the innovators. The inventors are a crazy species of human who dream of what isn’t yet. Innovators, a more pragmatic band, don’t have time for such past times, and get busy on making better what already is.

These two species can’t live without each other, but they don’t necessarily love each other, either. Sometimes, you find both in one body, but usually the Inventor or the Innovator holds the upper hand.

Adaptation: Watch this!

adaptation1_1024Im not sure if i can explain it, but there is a connection… Even if there isn’t just watch it. It is very original, and i think this because it really communicates the struggles and frustrations of trying to achieve originality. Process, process, process!
